May 2003 Construction Meeting Summary

Attendees: Ed Heron, Pat Gallagher and Aaron Birenboim.

We decided to meet at Ed's house to look at his Rabbit.

Project: VW Rabbit-we decided that the rear battery box would be a good place to start.  We discussed the VoltsRabbit plans in regard to the rear battery box.  Ed had originally stated the restriction that the rear seat had to remain intact because he had a dog, which has since passed.  We discussed moving the battery box forward to put the weight closer to the center of the car.  We discussed putting several batteries in front of the rear axel in place of the gas tank.  This would put more weight in the center of the car and reduce the number of batteries in the engine compartment.  We discussed using sheet metal instead of angle iron.  We would get a prettier box.  Victor's Renault was done this was way, looks good and appears to be structurally sound.  One issue with having a sheet metal box is that it is difficult to fabricate in a normal workshop.  We might have to have it professionally made, increasing the cost.
